Raging Thunder

Hello all! Today we left before sunrise for a bus ride south to the Tully River, where we joined up with the crew from Raging Thunder to go WHITE WATER RAFTING!!!! I had sooo much fun!!! Little bumps and bruises here and there, but overall it was a great afternoon in the Misty Mountains. Lot of waterfalls, raging rapids and a nice barbie halfway through. I don't have pictures of the scenery but here are some of my boat and my mates! I was dead in front with Meagan so I hope you enjoy our faces!!! Our guide's name was Masa and he was the Frog Man because he kept jumping all over the rocks!!! Miss you all! We have a travel day tomorrow heading to Airlie Beach and the Whitsundays (group of islands). I hope to get in touch with everyone soon. Love you! Cheers!
Ok so all of them couldn't load because it was taking too long so you'll just have to wait 'til I get back! By the way: kangaroo and crocodile both taste very good! :D

Cheers

Lions. Mermaids and The Best Man Ever!

Hello everyone!!!!

It's 8:32pm on Saturday July 10, 2010.

Technically this is starting my third week of the great adventure and it has been a blast so far!!! Last week we moved to Toomulla Beach, which is a 45 min drive from Townsville, and camped out in an RV campsite. Tents, sleeping bags, portable showers, and campfire meals all included! The volunteer work we did there was move a fence line back a few feet to prevent crazy people from driving their cars too close to the vegetation growing between the parking lot and the beach. This was really fun because we got to dig up 6 ft posts that were cemented into the ground, drill new holes using a fancy drill and then re-cement the posts back. What they thought would take 3 days took us 9 hrs. Go us! At another site, we put in low metal railings to prevent ATVs from again, driving on vegetation. We actually watched one turn around a few days after the job! :D

Because we were such hard workers, we got a free day off on Thursday. So, Terry, one of the CVA supervisors, took us up into the mountains (not even a 15 min drive away from our campsite) and we hiked through the rainforest at Paluma National Park. It was absolutely incredible! When we entered the forest, everyone went quiet as if we had entered a cathedral. The awe of the trees and creatures were breathtaking! We saw a couple of waterfalls and further down the mountain, went swimming in the mountain stream! It was amazing! That night we had a bonfire on the beach, and Terry told us stories of Lions, Mermaids and The Best Man ever, which happened to relate to the different animals in the area :D

Friday, we packed up camp and headed back to Townsville. A quick goodbye to Alex, our project leader, and all of the CVA staff, and then we were on a plane to Cairns (pronounced like "cans"). We are now currently living in Gilligan's Backpackers Hotel & Resort, which is huge and awesome! There's a club downstairs and a short walk to the beach. Here's the link if you want to see some of it: http://www.gilligansbackpackers.com.au/

There are 7 other projects here that have traveled from all parts of the east coast and there are 59 of us total on the Adventure Tour. Kip is our Tour Leader and she is a ball of energy! She's Australian born and bred, a surfer, forensic science major and has a need to not settle down! ;)

This morning we had our orientation and then headed to the Tjapukai Aboriginal Cultural Park, where we learned how to throw a boomerang (which I'm HORRIBLE at), play didgeridoos (I couldn't get the breathing thing right), and learned about the culture. It was really incredible to see the how they used the land and to hear the language. Then in the afternoon we had a Reef Teach to prepare for the GREAT BARRIER REEF tomorrow! I'm such a nerd, I wish I had my bio notes to review all of the creatures I might see tomorrow. I've rented an underwater camera and the beginners scuba class so I think I'm ready!

I'm sorry there are no pictures this time, the computers in Gilligan's don't have USB connections which is weird. I'm hoping to get back on either tomorrow night or the night after and see if I can upload some stuff for you to see! Until then, I love you and miss you all! Cheers!

The Pre-vaca-vacation!

Hello! So I've finally made it with pics so here's Mom, Dad and I's tours of San Diego and LA before I left!

We flew into San Diego Monday June 21st and it is a beautiful city with the sky line right on the harbor. This was our view from the hotel room right into Petco Park! We were living in the Gaslamp District which is an upscale historic part of downtown and it's really nice! Lots of restaraunts with outdoor seating! :D
Tuesday we went to the San Diego Zoo and it was very impressive! Very vistor-friendly with shaded paths and lots of education! Here are some pics from there!
That was so much fun! On Wednesday we went to Sea World and I don't have that many pics from there so moving on....

One of the nights we went to the Seaside Village and got to ride home in a carriage....it was fantastic!
Here are some of my other favorite pics from San Diego! I will talk to you all soon! Cheers!

Oy!

Wad up!?!?

hahaha hey everyone! :D Today is Wednesday, June 30th, 2010 at 3:03pm. So updates on what I'm doing: for the past three days we have started our volunteer projects and they have been very interesting. On Monday, we were along the Ross River collecting data on the water quality (a lot of chemistry stuff). Yesterday, we went to two different sites along Stuart Creek and collected water bugs to help identify how much pollution was in the water (go bugs!). Then today, we went to the Bohle Wetlands and took out over 2,000 sq meters of weeds and grasses not native to this area. So basically, today was our first test of actual labor. It is hot here, about 27 degrees c. so it's pretty warm.

The group I'm with is pretty cool. There are 9 of us total, including our project leader, Alex. He's the only other one from NC or in fact the southeast of the US. Others are from California, Kansas, Michigan, Ohio, Connecticut, and Canada! I have already been made fun of for saying "Y'all" and had to correct them on how to spell it as well. They got my name after 2 tries or so which is pretty cool! So, 3 guys + 6 girls. oh yeah, lots of estrogen around. We cook all of our meals right now, even a bag lunch for our working days, so it feels like college a little bit! We have group discussions every few days and keep a journal on everything that goes on, which is extremely helpful because I don't think I could remember all of the stories to share with you when I get back!!!

Again, I'm sorry I don't have pictures just yet. This was another sparatic trip to the internet den as a side trip from the bank ;)

Tomorrow the plan is to plant trees out in the Town Commons and then Friday work at a Nursery planting seeds. Time is not flying by like I had expected but not dragging along. So far there have been exciting moments, like our house visitors including an opposum and a lizard, fire alarms going off from a burnt morning breakfast, and Taylor, one of the guys, falling into the water on Monday! :) He is not living it down.

Okay folks! That's just about it on the update for now! I have money now so I will be able to put up pictures soon! I PROMISE! I'm wearing sunscreen, bugspray, protective gear, a goofy hat, and I have all of my digits! (That's for you mom!)

I love you all very much! 'Til next time! *MWAH*
